class week plan

Well, I have many ideas for my work during the class week at the college. One of my big things is how to use technology to support 3rd graders who are still working on reading and writing skills at variable levels. I would like to develop a site in which I can communicate with parents either in a blog way or newsletter about what we are working on in the class each week. But, I also want the site to be a pathway to many other subjects/activity areas/links.....lots to think about and lots to learn about to better develop these ideas. I also have some concerns about the time demand to keep the site active and alive during the school year.........Mike

Maybe storyboards and video - Like the idea of drawing parents into the classroom through the web.

Some of your concerns are mine as well Mike - want to use our new knowledge effectively, but not have it dominate time wise. I'll bet there are a lot of simple, but engaging activities for3rd grade reading and writing; I'm banking on all of us being exposed to many useful and time saving tools for both us and our students! I'm practically your neighbor right down the grooved pavement Rt. 5 here at Dummerston School!

I think connecting with the parents through the website is a great idea, and I agree - time is a concern. How about combining two activities into one by getting the students involved in a newletter - or scanning samples of student work to show rather than tell? Do you ever have any parent volunteers who might help with postings?

I am also concerned about keeping up with a website during the course of the year, Mike. I am guessing it is a habit one has to develop, and I'm willing to give it a try. It certainly would help me with absenteeism, the bane of my existence! I struggle with remembering all the papers and notes a student misses when absent, but if it is posted then is becomes a non-issue for me, the absent student, and his/her parents or guardians.

I love your blog site! Great picture. As for your website......... start small. I have one set up where every day they can get the word and question for the day without my having to do anything to the site. You could use it to post homework assignments or projects.
